High Refractive Index Nanocomposites for Nanoimprint Lithography (NIL) and Printing

Pixelligent’s Pixjet®, PixNIL® and PixCor™ formulations with PixClear® ZrO2 and TiO2 nanocrystals can create planarized films, uniquely printed volume pixels or “voxels” and nanoimprinted structures that are UV cured with high refractive index (RI) values for applications in the visible and IR spectra. Pixjet® formulated products for next-generation displays have RI values ranging from 1.65 to 1.72 for superior optical performance. Target applications for these inkjettable formulations include OLED, QLED, MicroLED, and 3D displays, as well as Extended Reality applications. PixNIL® products are resins with demonstrated NIL capability and RI values as high as 2.0. PixCor™ NIL products are stable under specific UV exposure and have as high as 1.9 RI at 550 nm along with high transparency, low haze and low absorbance in the visible light spectrum. Pixjet®, PixNIL® and PixCor™ nanomaterials can be tuned to meet many customer challenges being present in solvent or solvent-free formats of different viscosities for a wide range of film thicknesses.

Development of Energy Storage Structures Based on Redox Polymers

Structural supercapacitors hold the promise to significantly expand the energy capacity of a system by integrating load-bearing and energy-storage functions in a multi-functional structure, resulting in weight savings and safety improvements. Here we examined the integration of redox polymers into supercapacitor structures to serve as energy supplies that will be useful for untethered robots and general wireless electronics. A new Faradaic electrode material based on a conjugated polymer enhanced charge delocalization and thus improved stability dramatically. We tuned the UV epoxy resin with a gradient configuration to optimize it as a solid polymer electrolyte, to reinforce mechanical strength and optimize ionic conductivity at the same time. The gradient design enabled the structural supercapacitors to reach state-of-the-art performance and offered the critical benefit of long cycle life. This work demonstrated the application of a new class of stable redox-active materials, along with UV resin composition design, to meet the energy storage needs for short-range wireless electronics.

Reinventing Production: Carbon’s Digital Light Synthesis Platform

This presentation will provide an overview of Carbon’s Digital Light Synthesis (DLS) platform. We will discuss how DLS provides the key elements – speed, materials, and software – to enable true digital manufacturing at scale. Carbon’s dual-cure materials platform enables a broad portfolio of high performance resins for a variety of production applications. By combining light-curable chemistry with thermally-curable chemistry, high resolution parts with outstanding mechanical and thermal performance are now possible. Finally, we will present a variety of production applications enabled by DLS across a range of industries including footwear, protective cushioning, automotive, consumer products, dental, and medical.

On the Path to More Sustainable 3D Printing Formulations

3D printing, or Additive Manufacturing, is generally considered to be a sustainable option for manufacturing due to the ability to produce only what is needed at a given time and to achieve significant light-weighting of the parts produced, among other features. In the case of thermoplastic based 3D printing processes there are also increasingly options available for re-cycling of the polymers. For photopolymer 3D printing the use of bio-sourced raw materials and formulations is an attractive route to reduce the overall carbon footprint of the materials used. Arkema has been a pioneer in design, development and supply of bio-based (meth)acrylates with verifiable bio-carbon content. We are now leveraging this experience to create high-performance photopolymer 3D printing formulations with high bio-carbon content to help the industry reach both sustainability goals and performance needs.

Simplifying the Complex Sustainable World for UV Applications

This presentation will examine the sustainability landscape and identify the specific ways in which UV contributes to sustainability in 3D printing, packaging, wood, and energy efficiency and explore the ability of UV technology to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This is the driving concept of the term “sustainability” as it was coined in 1987 by the United Nations Brundtland Commission. There are 17 global goals that the UN aspires to achieve by 2030. The EU Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability Towards a Toxic-Free Environment (2020) aims to expand investment in and improve innovative capacity for the development of sustainable chemical products. The Sustainable Chemistry Research and Development Act of 2019 passed as part of the 2021 NDAA and the White House took in comments in 2022 on how sustainable chemistry should be defined to fit the needs of the U.S. On December 8, 2022, the Biden Administration celebrated first year accomplishments under President Biden’s Federal Sustainability Plan and Executive Order 14057. In the area of packaging, mandatory plastic recycled content laws, state extended producer responsibility laws, and concerns about microplastics make for a particularly complex landscape. The presentation will close with an update on the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) recent announcement that the Environmental Green Guides will be updated in 2023 and the role of sustainability claims in present and future advertising and marketing.
