UV Curing at the Frontier of Wearables and Smart Electronics

Investigating the transition of light-enabled curing technologies from gravure and flexographic presses to applications in flexible circuits, sensors, and wearable devices.

Ultraviolet (UV) curing has established itself as a high-speed, energy-efficient, and sustainable solution in industrial printing. Today, however, its impact is expanding far beyond traditional graphics and packaging. With continued advances in photopolymerization chemistry, materials design, and process control, UV curing is emerging as a platform technology for next-generation applications across multiple industries.

This talk will explore how UV-driven processes are enabling new frontiers in functional printing, wearable electronics, and smart materials. From lightweight circuits and flexible sensors to advanced coatings and adaptive surfaces, the precision and scalability of UV curing offer unique advantages for manufacturing at both industrial and consumer levels. The same core principles that once transformed printing are now unlocking opportunities in healthcare, electronics, and other high-value sectors where performance, sustainability, and speed are essential.

By connecting scientific insights in polymer chemistry with real-world industrial trends, this presentation will highlight how UV curing is shaping emerging technologies and markets. This presentation gives a broad perspective on where the field is headed, and how light-enabled curing can serve as a bridge between established printing workflows and breakthrough applications in advanced manufacturing.

Accelerating Innovation in Humanoid Robotics Through Polymer 3D Printing

Soft robotic design requires materials and prototyping strategies that balance compliance, durability, and printability. Conventional molding of silicones and elastomers constrains design iteration and limits the development of humanoid components. Here, we investigate powder-based additive methods and resin-based elastomer printing as complementary approaches for rapid prototyping of compliant robotic structures. Powder-bed techniques enable systematic exploration of porosity, density gradients, and damping behavior for lightweight components with tunable stiffness. Resin-based elastomer printing supports high-resolution geometries, variable durometer testing, and surface finishes suitable for tactile sensing and haptics. By eliminating mold fabrication and accelerating iteration cycles, these methods provide an expanded experimental toolkit for developing actuators, skins, and joints with tailored mechanical properties, advancing materials discovery for next-generation humanoid systems.

Short-Course: The Chemistry of UV/EB (Additional Fee Required)

Susan Bailey will present an introductory course on the basic chemistry of UV/EB curable formulations. Topics covered will include radiation sources, classes of photoinitiators, reactive and non-reactive formulation components, and typical challenges to successful curing systems. Susan will also discuss methods for analysis of the cured film and monitoring of the curing progression. The course is suitable for those with prior undergraduate chemistry course work or similar knowledge from experience.

Precision Fluid Delivery in Automotive Manufacturing: Leveraging Industrial Inkjet Technology

Efficient material delivery, ranging from viscous sealers to atomized paints, is a critical driver of cost, cycle time, and environmental impact for automotive OEMs. Industrial inkjet applicators are established norms in the graphics and textile industries, but transportation manufacturers are only beginning to realize their potential. This presentation explores the adaptation of inkjet technology for high-precision fluid delivery to minimize waste and optimize cycle time.

Specifically, we examine Ford’s development of industrial inkjet applicators in two key areas: the application of exterior paints, as well as adhesives for e-motors. UV-curable materials, while not required, can further enable the development and implementation of these applications. We will discuss the strategic motivation behind adopting this technology, the technical challenges associated with the applicators, and the future use of these applicators in a modern automotive assembly environment.
